Tips to Handle Holiday Stress
With the holiday season fast approaching, there is always extra stress involved. Whether it’s trying to find the time and money to complete shopping, the added stress of having a house full of family members, or any other related stressors, there are simple things you can do to help alleviate some of that stress, so you can better enjoy the holiday season.
Plan Ahead
List the tasks you need to accomplish like shopping, cooking, decorating, etc., and keep these tasks more manageable by scheduling specific times for each of them to minimize any last-minute rushing around
Set Realistic Expectations
There’s no such thing as a “perfect” holiday. Accept that things may go differently than you expect and be flexible.
Set a Budget and Stick to It
Money is always a factor in the stress of the holidays, so make a budget for things like food, decorations, gifts, and outings and do your best to stick to it.
Practice Self-Care
Don’t neglect your personal needs. Be sure to eat regularly, maintain exercise routines, and try to keep as normal a sleep schedule as possible. Try to make time for yourself to refresh your mind, as well…even if it’s as simple as reading a book for a half hour.
Learn to Say “No”
Nobody can make it to every holiday event, and trying to do so will only add to your stress. Don’t spread yourself too thin and feel obligated to accommodate everyone.
Delegate and Ask for Help
Trying to take on too much responsibility is a sure-fire way to stress yourself out…especially during the holidays. Have friends and/or family members help with cooking, decorating, shopping, and gift-wrapping to turn stressful tasks into bonding activities.
Take Breaks from Social Media
Social media can be great, but it can also add to holiday stress, whether it comes through friend and family drama or seeing the holiday experiences of others. Limit screen time and focus on the people you are with.
Focus on Gratitude
Maintain focus on the things you are grateful for, rather than focusing on things that cause you holiday stress.
Create a Relaxation Routine
Make time to listen to music, enjoy a cup of tea or coffee, take a short walk, or anything else that helps to decompress and cope with the stress you’re feeling.
Reflect on Traditions
Every family has traditions, but some of them can cause stress or conflict. Focus on traditions that bring joy and togetherness and don’t be afraid to skip those that are problematic.
