Personality Disorders

Personality disorders result in inflexible, maladaptive thought patterns that impact behavioral choices and often interfere with daily functioning. Because of unhealthy thought patterns, individuals with personality disorders struggle to have positive and lasting relationships with self and with others. This struggle is typically seen in all aspects of life (i.e., family, friends, work).

The personality disorder may reveal itself through peculiar, eccentric thoughts and/or actions. Or, perhaps, the disorder may present with dramatic, emotional, and/or unpredictable thoughts and/or behaviors. Finally, the disorder may be characterized with anxious and fearful thoughts and/or actions.

There is not a definitive, identifiable cause for the development of personality disorders. It is believed, however, that a combination of genetic predisposition and environment contribute to their development. Thus, for example, if family members have been diagnosed with mental disorders, if brain chemistry is not balanced, and/or if there has been abuse (i.e., experienced or witnessed), there is a greater possibility that a personality disorder may develop. In light of this, intervention is an important movement toward creating a sense of life-balance.

The therapists at Meredith Psychological & Testing Services, LLC are trained to help individuals struggling with personality disorders progress toward a more balanced life. By focusing on present-time thinking, these individuals can learn to become more grounded.
